Moms Off Duty: Our Girls Trip to Moon Palace Grand Cancun (and yes, we saw Noah Kahan)
Can I tell you something? I almost talked myself out of this trip.
You know how it goes. The logistics pile up, the mom guilt creeps in, the voice in your head says maybe next year. It was VERY last minute. But my college best friend Brandi had already said yes, she expedited a passport, the flights were booked, and January in Cancun was calling our names. So I packed my bags, kissed my family goodbye, and got on that plane.
And y'all.... I am so glad I did.
This was not a family trip. This was a girls trip. A real one. The kind where you sleep in, order room service in your pajamas, get dressed up for a nice dinner just because you feel like it, and spend four days doing exactly what you want with one of your favorite humans on earth. Brandi and I met in college and there is just something about a friend who has known you that long — you pick up right where you left off every single time.
We stayed at The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun in January 2025 for the Out of the Blue Music Festival, and I genuinely don't have enough good things to say about either one.
Wait — A "Family Resort" for a Girls Trip? Absolutely... Yes!
Here's something I want to say loud and clear, because I hear people write off big family-friendly all-inclusives when they're planning adult travel: don't do that.
A resort this large, this well-staffed, and this well-designed doesn't stop being incredible just because your kids aren't with you. If anything, you get to experience it in a completely different way — you eat at the nicer restaurants, you stay at the pool bar longer, you actually use the spa, and you notice all the things you would have been too busy to appreciate with little ones in tow.
The Grand at Moon Palace is one of those properties. And as someone who plans travel for families AND for adults who need a break from being parents — this one works beautifully for both.
Speaking of planning — girls trips are one of my absolute favorite things to help coordinate.Coordinating schedules, finding the right resort, handling the details so everyone just shows up and has fun? That's my love language. Let's plan your girls trip together →
The Property: Massive, Beautiful, and Never Overwhelming
The Grand is part of the larger Moon Palace complex, which means as a guest you have full access to three resorts — The Grand, Nizuc, and Moon Palace Cancun. That is a lot of property. Golf cart shuttles run constantly to get you between them, which honestly added to the fun. We felt like we were exploring something new every day without ever having to leave.
The Grand itself is stunning — upscale, beautifully maintained, and designed in a way that feels luxurious without being cold or stuffy. Our Grand Deluxe Garden View suite was spacious and modern with a double whirlpool tub, a fully stocked minibar, a gorgeous balcony, and more storage than I've seen in most hotel rooms. After long days of festival and pool time, coming back to that room felt like a reward.
The Food: Where Do I Even Start
All-inclusive dining has a reputation, and The Grand does not deserve that reputation. The food here is genuinely, legitimately good.
Jade — the Asian restaurant — was one of our favorites. Beautiful presentation, fresh sushi, and an atmosphere that felt special without being fussy. JC Steakhouse was our "we're getting dressed up tonight" dinner and it delivered completely — incredible steaks, attentive service, and that get dressed up to go out energy even on a girls trip.
The Grand Buffet was perfect for the mornings when we rolled out of bed late and just wanted everything available at once. (No shame. Girls trip rules.)
And then there's the speakeasy. Y'all. Hidden, cool, perfectly styled, and exactly the kind of place you want to find on a trip like this. Brandi and I sat in there longer than we planned and I have zero regrets.
With restaurants spread across the full Moon Palace complex, we never once felt like we were eating the same thing twice even over multiple days.
Out of the Blue Music Festival: The Whole Reason We Came
Okay let's talk about why we were there in the first place.
Out of the Blue is a music festival held right on the resort property — and the lineup in January 2025 was stacked. We were there specifically to see Noah Kahan and The Lumineers, and both were everything we hoped for. There is something about hearing music you love in an outdoor festival setting in Cancun in January that just hits differently than any concert venue ever could. The staff told us that the other festivals are larger at this time, but this was a massive event with a LOT of planning that went into it.
The festival setup worked so well with the resort. You could come and go, grab drinks, there was food that we were able to snag within the concert area set up (including fresh made churros!), find a spot on the lawn or the pool or the beach, and just be there without any of the logistical stress of an off-property festival. No shuttles to coordinate, no worrying about getting back. You're already there. The people with decorated balconies and direct views of the concert stage truly had it made!
If a destination music festival has ever been on your bucket list — this format is the move. Keep an eye on Out of the Blue for future lineups, Crash My Playa line ups, Dave Matthews Band lineups, and more!
What We Did When We Weren't at the Festival
A lot, as it turns out.
We spent mornings watching people do water aerobics (more fun than it sounds, I promise and I'm a people watcher), wandered around what is genuinely one of the largest resort water parks I have ever seen in my life (we kept saying "the kids would absolutely lose their minds here" and we were right, it is going on the family trip list immediately), took advantage of the gym, and watched live bands around the property while sipping one fresh coconut water that we had access to right by the pool and beach (a perk of staying at the Grand!).
The bowling alley and arcade exist, which again — different trip with the kids, but still fun to know it's there. There were themed night shows that were genuinely entertaining, pools for every mood (lively and social or calm and quiet), and poolside service that meant we rarely had to move if we didn't feel like it.
We also ordered room service and watched TV in our robes like the tired moms we are. That counted too.
The beach was soft sand and bright Caribbean blue, exactly what you picture when you book Cancun. We walked it in the mornings and it was the perfect slow start to the day.
Why Family Resorts Make the Best Girls Trip Destinations
I want to come back to this because I think it matters.
When you choose a large, well-run family resort for a girls trip or an adults-only getaway, you're getting the benefit of a property that has been designed to handle everything. The staffing is excellent because they're used to managing lots of guests with lots of needs. The amenities are extensive because they have to keep everyone happy. The dining is varied because they can't afford to be one-note.
You're essentially getting a luxury experience inside an infrastructure built to over-deliver and without kids in tow, you get to enjoy all of it at your own pace.
Don't sleep on these properties for adult travel. Truly.
I plan girls trips, couples trips, and adults-only getaways just as much as I plan family vacations — and honestly, they are some of the most fun itineraries I put together. If you've got a group of friends who need a reason to finally make it happen, I'd love to be that reason. Reach out and let's talk →
Tips If You're Planning The Grand at Moon Palace
A few things I'd tell you before you go:
Download the resort app before you arrive and make your specialty restaurant reservations immediately when your booking window opens. Even all-inclusive, the good spots fill up — especially during festival weekends.
Book a room in The Grand specifically if that's where you want to be. The complex is large and where you're housed matters for how close you are to things. (Please note the other 2 resorts are equally great with different amenities)!
Use the golf cart shuttles without guilt. The property is enormous. That's what they're there for.
Build in one slow day. We needed it. Even on a girls trip with no kids to manage, pacing yourself makes the whole experience better.
Come for a festival if you can. Out of the Blue added a layer to this trip that made it feel like a true event rather than just a vacation. Check the Moon Palace events calendar when you're planning.

The Part That Stays With You
Here's what I keep coming back to when I think about this trip.
Brandi and I have been friends for a long time. Life gets busy, kids and careers and everything in between, and sometimes you go longer between visits than you mean to. But four days in Cancun dancing to The Lumineers, laughing too loud at the speakeasy, walking the beach in the morning quiet reminded me why you have to protect those friendships. You have to show up for them, literally and figuratively.
The resort was incredible. Even the bathroom above - STUNNING! The festival was a dream. But the best part was just being there with someone who knows me, laughing at nothing, and remembering that moms need to go off duty sometimes too.
So if you're on the fence about booking your girls trip — consider this your sign. You deserve it. And if you want help planning it, I'm right here.
