We Took Our Three Kids to the Famous Pink Belmond Mount Nelson in Cape Town… And It Was One of Our Best Family Hotel Stays Ever
When we told people we were bringing our 8-, 11-, and 13-year-old to the grand old Belmond Mount Nelson that iconic pink lady in Cape Town… I could see the looks. A luxury hotel like that? With kids? A few folks clearly pictured stuffy hallways and side-eye from the staff.
Y’all, it was the opposite. It turned out to be one of the most welcoming, relaxing, and memorable family hotel stays we’ve ever had.
Locals call it “The Nellie,” and once you stay there, you get why they say it with so much affection. Opened in 1899, the whole property is layered with history. The main building is the famous pink one, but many of the other white buildings couldn’t be painted pink because of their age and historical status which only adds to the charm and character of the place. It sits right under Table Mountain with those jaw-dropping views over the gardens. What surprised me most is that all that grandeur never felt intimidating. It’s a genuinely elegant hotel where a family of five can actually exhale and be ourselves.
The space was everything after long travel days. The sprawling lawns and gardens gave our kids room to roam, burn off energy, and just be kids while Benton and I soaked it all in. No one shushing them or giving dirty looks. That kind of breathing room is gold when you’re traveling with three children.
They also have fantastic family room options and suites, so don’t just book a standard room. Ask about connecting rooms or family configurations when you reserve. We had plenty of space without feeling crammed, which made nights so much smoother.

But what really made it special? The people.
The bellmen greeted us like old friends. The concierge quietly smoothed out our days. Staff set out little slices of cake in the afternoons, and everyone from the groundskeepers who clearly loved those gardens to the housekeepers who left us fresh flowers and notes for our anniversary and scavenger hunts for the kids. They truly treated our kids like they belonged there. They learned our names fast, remembered our preferences, and made the whole place feel warm instead of stuffy.
That’s the magic you can’t fake. You can build a beautiful hotel, but the heart comes from the people. The Nellie has it in spades.
Coming back to The Nellie each day felt like coming home.
Our days in Cape Town were full, even in the rain! And exploring the city wore the kids out. Then we’d return to peaceful gardens, heated pools, and those Table Mountain views. The complimentary shuttle to the V&A Waterfront was a game-changer too. No hunting for parking or dealing with tired-kid Uber drama. We’d hop on, enjoy the waterfront buzz, and come back to calm.
Benton was obsessed with the gym (one of the best he’s seen at any resort), and they offered free morning yoga and stretching classes. Win for everyone.

The hotel also has stunning suites and multiple room configurations built for families, so you are not trying to cram everyone into one tight room. Ask about the family layouts when you book.
Why we chose The Nellie over staying right at the V&A Waterfront
I almost booked at the V&A Waterfront. Cape Grace, a Fairmont property was stunning and really a close second for us. It felt to be the obvious choice and totally fine. But I’m so glad we went with The Nellie instead. We have talked about this a dozen times since coming home. The Waterfront is fun and energetic, but it can feel like a lot after a long day with kids. The Nellie has its own lovely bustle (locals coming for breakfast and high tea and great on-site restaurants), but it feels calmer and more spacious.
Plus, it’s right off Kloof Street, so incredible food and shopping are basically at your doorstep. We got the best of both worlds: a peaceful, beautiful home base + easy access to the action via that shuttle. I will NEVER forget the amazing Nelson’s Eye restaurant right out the back gate of the Nellie. It’s a MUST in Cape Town and was a recommendation by our private tour guide, Lizell and the concierge at the Mount Nelson.
Things our family still talks about
The gardens & Raegan’s creative moments: The flowers were everywhere, and Raegan borrowed my Meta Glasses to snap tons of photos and videos of the textures and florals. She loves drawing and painting, and those shots became perfect references for her art. Little moments like that turn a hotel stay into something special.
Afternoon tea: Iconic and worth it at least once. It’s a special experience that makes kids feel fancy without being fussy.
The resident cat: Yes, really. Jed spent half the trip “hunting” for Nellie the cat around the property. Sometimes the simplest joys steal the show on family trips. I have SO many pictures and videos of this cat on my phone he took.
Breakfast: It got all five of us excited to wake up. A great breakfast sets the whole day up right, and theirs delivered every morning.
You could easily spend a full day on property just wandering gardens, hitting the heated pool (the first one in Cape Town!), or just enjoying the views, and it would be a highlight, not a compromise. I enjoyed sitting on my balcony with a cup of coffee each morning listening to the fountain outside of my room!

Yes, it works wonderfully with kids. Don’t let the luxury name scare you off—the space, family room options, and welcoming staff make it genuinely family-friendly.
Ask specifically about family room setups and connecting options.
Use the complimentary V&A Waterfront shuttle, it saves so much hassle.
Do afternoon tea at least once.
Leave unscheduled time on property. The gardens, pools, and that cat are part of the magic.
Come hungry for breakfast because it’s a daily highlight.
We only had three nights in Cape Town, and it wasn’t nearly enough (weather kept us from Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, unfortunately).
