Newport, Rhode Island with Kids: Our Perfect Fall Getaway from Georgia
We loved a good view during dinner!
Some places are exactly what you expect.
Newport wasn't.
We expected beautiful mansions, sailboats, and fresh seafood. We expected history and ocean views.
What we didn't expect was how easy it would be to settle into the rhythm of the town.
By the end of our first afternoon, we weren't checking attractions off a list anymore. We were wandering side streets because they looked interesting. The kids were stopping to watch boats come into the harbor. Benton was already talking about where he wanted to try his next lobster roll. I was still searching for the perfect local coffee shop.
Loved exploring Newport in fall!
Somehow Newport felt both elegant and relaxed.
Historic without feeling stuffy. Upscale without feeling exclusive.
It's one of those places where you can spend the morning touring a Gilded Age mansion and the evening watching your kids laugh as they roll down a grassy hill overlooking the Atlantic.
That's exactly why we fell in love with it.
We visited during fall break for Benton's 40th birthday, flying into Providence before making the easy drive to Newport. Looking back, it was one of our favorite long weekends as a family.
Would we go back? Without question.
In fact, we're already talking about seeing Newport in the spring when the mansion gardens are in bloom.
Why Newport Is One of the Best Family Getaways in New England
Before this trip, Newport had always lived in our minds as a destination for couples.
Luxury hotels, historic mansions, sailing, weekend getaways.
Instead, we discovered a destination that worked incredibly well for our family.
The downtown is walkable, the restaurants welcome kids, the waterfront was constantly entertaining, history came alive inside the mansions, and there was enough outdoor spaces that kids never felt like they were being asked to quietly admire beautiful buildings all day.
That balance is harder to find than you might think.
As a travel advisor, I've learned that families remember destinations where everyone feels included.
Parents want great food, kids want room to explore, and everyone wants to slow down.
Newport checked every box.
Where We Stayed: The Brenton Hotel
Choosing where to stay in Newport isn't easy.
There are historic inns, waterfront hotels, boutique properties, and luxury resorts.
We chose The Brenton Hotel, and we'd happily stay there again.
The Brenton
Its location was one of the biggest reasons.
Within minutes we could walk to restaurants, shopping, the harbor, and many of Newport's most popular attractions.
Instead of constantly moving the car, we simply parked and explored on foot.
That made the entire weekend feel more relaxed.
One feature we unexpectedly loved was the still and sparkling water stations on every floor. It sounds like a small detail until you've spent the day walking around Newport and realize how nice it is to refill your bottle before heading back out.
The complimentary ice cream bar was another favorite with our kids.
Simple touches like that make families feel genuinely welcome.
The Brenton Hotel is stunning but the rooms are immaculate!
Behind the hotel sits the marina, and that's where we stumbled onto one of our favorite unexpected finds of the trip.

If you weren't looking for it, you could easily walk right past it. Don't.

Grab your food, find a seat overlooking the boats, and enjoy one of Newport's simplest pleasures.
Sometimes those unplanned meals become the ones you remember most.
The Great Newport Lobster Roll Debate
If there's one thing Benton was determined to accomplish in Newport, it was finding the best lobster roll.
The challenge?
He's spent enough time in Boston to have strong opinions about New England seafood.
Every lobster roll we ordered was immediately compared to one he'd had somewhere around Boston.
Naturally, that meant trying both styles.
Newport, RI
The traditional cold lobster roll, lightly dressed with mayonnaise.
And the warm Connecticut-style roll served with melted butter.
Ask five people in New England which is better, and you'll probably get five different answers.
Benton still hasn't fully decided.
What he did decide was that Newport absolutely deserves to be part of the conversation.
From restaurants to that little marina food truck behind The Brenton, the seafood consistently impressed us.
Our Favorite Restaurants
If we had to choose one meal we'd come back for tomorrow, it would be Thames Street Kitchen.
Thames Street Kitchen had the best steak and sauces!
It was easily our favorite restaurant of the trip.
The atmosphere felt relaxed without sacrificing quality, the service was excellent, and every course reminded us why Newport has become such a respected food destination.
It's the kind of restaurant that feels special without trying too hard.
The kind you recommend before someone even asks where they should eat.
22 Bowen's delivered exactly what you'd expect from one of Newport's classic steakhouses, making it another meal we'll remember long after the trip.
The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar Restaurant offered beautiful waterfront views and those famous biscuits that absolutely deserve their reputation.

Safari Room became one of our favorite places to relax and watch the sun begin to set, even if the food itself didn't stand out as much as the view.
Wally's Wieners reminded us that not every memorable vacation meal has to be expensive.
Sometimes a hot dog after a day of sightseeing is exactly what everyone wants.
